Oxford, United Kingdom – A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) in Oxford. The Observatory Dome, a major architectural feature of the new research campus, has been unveiled after the removal of its temporary protective cover.

The dome, which sits atop the Littlemore Brook building, is now visible for the first time. Its appearance marks a notable step forward in the completion of the EIT campus, which is designed to advance research in health, medical science, food security, climate change, and artificial intelligence.

Engineering Innovation and Adaptive Design

The centerpiece of the development is a striking 20 m diameter dome. It is constructed from a laminated timber core enclosed by an external steel structure. This steel framework is not just for aesthetics; it is a dynamic shading system that automatically tracks the sun’s movement throughout the day.

Powered by four motors and an advanced drive system, the 80 t steel structure can theoretically complete a full rotation in ten minutes. However, its true engineering achievement is its precision. To accurately follow the sun, the system performs a series of fine, controlled start-and-stop movements, placing exceptional demands on its mechanics.

The dome is designed as a multifunctional space for learning, lectures, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It will serve as a key destination for supporting scientific exchange across different disciplines, helping to accelerate discovery and innovation on the campus.

A Milestone for the Project Team

For several months, the dome remained concealed beneath a specially engineered temporary membrane. This protective layer was essential, creating a controlled environment for the sensitive installation of the complex timber structure and glazing works, shielding them from the elements.

The unveiling was celebrated on site with key project leaders and representatives from the companies involved. Notably, the removal of the protective membrane was completed approximately two weeks ahead of schedule. Thomas Spitzer, Managing Director of se-austria GmbH & Co. KG, commented on the achievement.

“The unveiling of the Dome is a special moment for the entire project team. After months of intensive planning, fabrication, and installation, the result is now visible for the first time. This milestone reflects the exceptional commitment, technical expertise, and collaborative spirit demonstrated by all project partners throughout the project.”

The seele group, operating under its kinetIQ brand, engineered the entire movable building envelope for the dome. This project represents a pioneering achievement for the company. It is the first time seele has engineered a complete building envelope capable of movement. The dome sets a new benchmark for adaptive architecture.

Broader Campus Façade Systems

While the dome is a prominent feature, seele is responsible for numerous other complex façade systems across the EIT campus. The company’s scope includes steel window systems, curtain wall façades, and fire-rated façades. The project also features roof glazing systems and bespoke architectural elements.

Global Expertise in Façade Engineering

The seele group, headquartered in Gersthofen, Bavaria, Germany, specializes in highly engineered façades. The company offers a full range of services from planning to installation worldwide. Its expertise includes developing innovative solutions for movable and retractable structures.

Founded in 1984, seele operates multiple state-of-the-art production facilities. The company employs approximately 1,000 people globally and generates an annual turnover of 350 million euros. The Austrian office, se-austria GmbH & Co. KG, delivered the Oxford dome project.

The seele group’s façade construction specialist develops cutting-edge architectural designs. Its projects are known for setting new standards in scale, aesthetics, and technical advancement. The Oxford dome continues this tradition of innovative and precise engineering. The Ellison Institute of Technology campus is located at Littlemore Brook, Oxford, England, UK, with architecture by Support + Partners / Axis, and is set to be completed on 5 November 2026.
