Elegant Southern California Home Is Surprisingly Easygoing
This Southern Californian residence, located in an established neighborhood, blends elegance with a relaxed atmosphere. The property belonged to a young couple who were returning to their childhood area and wanted to update a home with good bones. California-based interior designer Lindye Galloway took on the full renovation, focusing on a new flow that emphasizes the connection between indoor and outdoor living.

In the formal living room, she utilized tall ceilings paired with arched doors. Conversely, the family room has a lower ceiling, which she designed to feel cozy and intentional. She installed reclaimed wood beams across the room to create a European aesthetic that complements the taller space.
The design incorporates traditional elements to suit the existing Spanish Modern architecture. This includes a stone slab fireplace, dark wood millwork, parquet flooring in the bathroom, and warm brass finishes. A neutral palette of soft furnishings adds depth and character without overpowering the natural materials.
The couple needed a home that accommodated various types of gatherings. Consequently, Galloway designed the dining room separately from the main living area and added a standalone bar and wine room. These distinct zones allow for flow during large parties while maintaining intimacy during smaller events. The custom marble fireplace in the formal living room provides a focal point that anchors the space.
Galloway noted that the project was rewarding because of the client’s trust and creative freedom. The result is a home that feels spacious and open yet remains grounded by unique details like heavy-veining marble, patterned tile, and timber beams in the kitchen. While the structure is grand, the overall effect is one of comfort and livability.
