Patio transformed with painted rug design

Terry from “Forever Decorating!” transformed her concrete patio into an outdoor room by painting a rug design directly onto the surface. The result features a gray-and-concrete checkerboard, black borders, and a white center panel, creating an illusion of a large outdoor rug.
The project took four hours a day for one week to complete, using DecoArt Patio Paint Outdoor in three colors: gray, black, and white. Instead of covering the entire area with a base coat, Terry incorporated exposed concrete into the pattern, reducing the amount of paint and work required.
Design and Pattern
The painted design includes a large rectangle with checkerboard blocks surrounding a white center marked “Welcome.” Black lines create several borders around the design, with small white motifs and letters marking north, south, east, and west at the midpoint of each side. Gray dots repeat inside the white sections, adding to the overall pattern.
A closer look reveals that the gray blocks are painted, while the tan blocks between them are the patio itself. This design choice turned the existing concrete color into one of the main colors in the rug, eliminating the need for additional coating.
Furniture and Illusion
With the furniture removed, the scale of the painted design becomes clear. Once the sofa, chair, and coffee table are returned to their positions, the painted rectangle behaves like a real area rug. Furniture legs cross its borders, and portions of the checkerboard disappear beneath the seats, creating a seamless illusion.
The design also defines the seating area without adding material over the concrete. There are no rug corners beneath the furniture, and no edge between the painted pattern and patio to catch a chair leg. The black furniture repeats the narrow painted outlines and corner diamonds, while pale cushions pick up the white and gray sections.
Practical Benefits
The painted rug design provides several practical benefits. Rain can drain and dry from the concrete without a textile rug holding water underneath. Cleaning is also simpler because there is nothing to lift or move before washing the patio. According to Terry, the patio was power washed every year, and a brick border painted with the same product was still present almost 13 years later.
