Instagram Creator Spray-Paints Oak Cabinets Off-Black

An Instagram creator transformed a kitchen‘s oak cabinets to a matte Off-Black finish using Farrow & Ball paint instead of replacing the existing cabinetry. The project preserved the black worktops, stainless-steel appliances, and dark stone-look floor tiles while updating the visual impact of the space. The creator, @themobilespray, documented the process of preparing and spraying the fitted oak doors and frames to achieve a unified dark aesthetic.
Preparing the Existing Cabinetry
The oak Shaker cabinets originally wrapped around three sides of the kitchen, featuring natural wood doors, black granite-like countertops, and long silver handles. Rather than dismantling the fitted units, the creator removed the doors and drawer fronts while masking the cabinet openings, worktops, and stainless-steel splashback with plastic. The cabinet carcasses remained fixed beneath the windows and around the range throughout the project.
Before spraying, the detached oak doors underwent sanding to remove their existing surface, followed by application of a dark primer to ensure proper coverage. Farrow & Ball Off-Black was then applied as a matte topcoat, chosen for its ability to create a smooth, uniform finish across the cabinet fronts, rails, and stiles.
Transforming the Visual Impact
The matte Off-Black finish eliminated the oak grain variation that previously separated each door and drawer front, creating a continuous dark plane that now unifies the lower cabinet runs. The black worktops, left in place, form a dark line directly above the newly painted surfaces, while the stainless-steel range, splashback, and oversized hood remain centered on the cooking wall as the lightest major elements in the room.

The tall cabinet beside the freestanding refrigerator now appears as one solid black block from floor to ceiling, its original proportions, trim, and silver handles retained but recontextualized against the new finish. The same applies to the wide drawer bank beneath the largest window, where the bar pulls create thin metallic lines across the matte fronts, emphasizing the sleek transformation without altering the cabinet configuration.
White window frames and pale walls provide the strongest contrast above the dark cabinetry, while the existing dark stone-look floor tiles remain in the completion photos. A light grey floor is planned to introduce additional contrast beneath the Off-Black surfaces, though this update has yet to be completed.
Detailing the Cabinet Transformation
The tall cabinet beside the refrigerator extends from floor to ceiling, its full-height door, lower compartment, and projecting top trim now unified under the Off-Black coating. The original plinth and side panel remain intact, preserving the cabinet’s architectural proportions while its surface transforms visually. The recessed Shaker panels, rails, and stiles retain their profile, but the oak’s natural grain variation disappears entirely beneath the matte finish.
The same hardware positions and sizes persist, ensuring continuity while the Off-Black surface recontextualizes their visual weight.
