Testing Electric Grill Changes Perspective

My partner and I have long relied on a propane travel grill for outdoor cooking, whether camping or road tripping. Over time, we’ve mastered grilling in challenging conditions, from snow to heat waves. But this summer, we swapped our propane setup for an electric grill. The transition wasn’t immediate—initially, we clung to our gas habits. Yet, within days, we were hooked. Electric grills offer simplicity, health benefits, and cleaner air, reshaping how we cook.

Until recently, I assumed electric grills were outdated, recalling the George Foreman grill’s reputation as a smoke-filled sandwich press. But research on gas grills’ health and environmental downsides intrigued me. My partner was skeptical, though he eventually tried it. After searing a ribeye, he became a convert. Some dismiss electric grills as lacking flavor or “manliness,” but I see the shift as a chance to break habits—healthier ones, at that.

Grilling meat can introduce carcinogens, especially from charcoal or gas. Smoke and flare-ups from gas grills contribute to air pollution, worsening asthma and adding to greenhouse gas emissions. While one grill might seem minor, global grilling practices significantly impact air quality. The electric grill’s water pan collects drippings, reducing smoke and making indoor cooking possible. It’s also easier to clean, with a PFOA-free nonstick grate and a removable water pan.

Taste preferences vary. I don’t notice much difference when grilling veggie burgers, but my partner, a carnivore, slightly favors the propane grill’s flavor. However, he’s not enough to abandon the electric model. The grill’s consistent heat distribution ensures even cooking, eliminating flare-ups and allowing precise temperature control. It’s also UL-rated for indoor and outdoor use, performing better in cold weather than our gas grill.

We’ve used the electric grill for two months, and our propane grill now sits unused on the porch. While the old model had superior flavor, the health benefits and convenience of the new grill outweigh that. We don’t have to monitor it in freezing weather or worry about propane shortages. Still, we keep the propane grill for camping trips and special occasions where flame-broiling feels essential.
